Best Romances of 2016: 32 of the Love Stories We Couldn’t Shut Up About

What were the best romance novels of 2016?

The staff of Heroes and Heartbreakers is lucky that romance is our day job. From covers to TV and movie couples, to our favorite bew books and comfort reads, 2016 introduced some romances that will find their way onto our keeper shelves!

Jennifer Proffitt's Top Romances of 2016

Never Sweeter by Charlotte Stein

Stein tells a beautiful story that will challenges your perceptions of what is forgivable and how to forgive—both yourself and those who have wronged you. You wouldn't think the story of a bully and the bullied would have so much lightness and heart to it, but Stein tackles the subject in a meaningful, sweet, and sexy way with her signature style.

From Sanctum with Love by Lexi Blake

It was around this time last year that I was first recommended Lexi Blake's Masters and Mercenaries, and it quickly became apparent that I would NEED Kai's story at some point. From Sanctum with Love delivers in spades a story that is everything this sadist deserves and everything my little reading heart could want: office romance, thrilling suspense, and melt-you-eyeballs sensuality. Read the whole series if you haven't, because you'll be panting for Kai's story too!

Bittersweet by Sarina Bowen

I’m from farm country but live in the city, so day dreaming of farm life isn’t something I think I’d be naturally drawn to. However like many Sarina Bowen books, she changes everything for me. The men in Bowen's Bittersweet are built for hard work, they’re dedicated to their land and to their women, and they know it takes a lot of work to make something grow—just what you want in a romance hero. We know happy-ever-afters are guaranteed in romance, but nonetheless, Bowen managed to keep me on the edge of my seat whether they would really make it work. Spoiler alert: there are no bittersweet endings here.

Deadmen Walking by Sherrilyn Kenyon

New York Comic Con is full of big reveals, and for romance fans, the fun has already started. Earlier today, Sherrilyn Kenyon revealed the cover for the first book, Deadmen Walking (May 2017)!

Entertainment Weekly had the exclusive reveal, where you can learn more about the book:

This initial installment follows Devyl Bane, an ancient dark warlord who has returned to the human realm as an infamous pirate. He makes a pact with an immortal called Thorn—who’s tasked with keeping the very worst of the ancient gods’ former creations at bay. But the enchanted gates he’s kept them behind are breaking, and it’s up to Bane and his crew of Deadmen to keep these evil creatures from getting out.

One Hell of a Lover: Demons in Romance Novels from Kenyon, Brook, Langlais, Cole, and More!

One Silent Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon

“O what a black, dark hill is yon,

”That looks so dark to me?“

”O it is the hill of hell,“ he said,

”Where you and I shall be.”

—From The Daemon Lover, a Scottish ballad.

Ballads, poetry and fiction are rich with demon lovers, and even Fox Television is getting in on the act with Lucifer, a series which Geek Speak Magazine delightfully describes as full of ‘implied orgies’. But the orgies are important, folks, because the thing about demons is that their grace, danger and beauty enthralls whether they’re good, bad or a bit of both. Yes, the truly compelling demon lover ensures that the biggest burning (yes, I went there) question on a reader’s mind is when the demon sexy times are going to show.

Luckily, readers are blessed when it comes to infernal dalliance as there are more demons in romance than you can poke a pitchfork at, and when not frolicking around Hell, they can generally be found booty grazing or roasting the broomstick.

Dragonmark: Exclusive Excerpt

Dragonmark by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Centuries ago, Illarion was betrayed—a dragon made human against his will, then forced to serve humanity as a dragonmount in their army, and to fight for them in barbaric wars, even while he hated everything about them. Enslaved and separated from everyone he knew and from his own dragon brothers, he was forced into exile in a fey realm where he lost the only thing he ever really loved.

Now he has a chance to regain what’s been lost—to have the one thing he covets most. But only if he gives up his brothers and forsakes the oaths he holds most dear. Yet what terrifies him most isn’t the cost his happiness might incur, it’s the fact that there is just enough human in his dragon’s heart that he might actually be willing to pay it and betray everything and everyone– to see the entire world burn and the Were-Hunter clans fall–to sacrifice his own brothers–for his own selfish desire.

Long ago, Edilyn saved Illarion’s life and almost tamed the feral beast. Now she must stop him from fulfilling the Dragonmark prophecy or do what she was trained to do. Slay the dragon who spared her life to save the rest of humanity. Something that should be easy for a dragonslayer of her skills, yet nothing is ever as simple as it seems. And sometimes, just sometimes, the key to salvation lies not in the hands of your most trusted friends, but in those of your worst enemies.

Get a sneak peek at Sherrilyn Kenyon's newest Dark-Hunter tale, Dragonmark (out today!!!), with an exclusive excerpt of a selected scene.

Breathless, Illarion pulled back to stare down at Edilyn in utter disbelief of her innocently sweet kiss. One so inept that it drove home just how inexperienced she was. More touched than he wanted to admit, he smiled at her. He placed a tender kiss to her forehead, then started away.

Once again, she stopped him.

A Kiss of Fate by Mary Jo Putney

—Deal Alert: Mary Jo Putney's Scottish-set fantasy novel, A Kiss of Fate, is $.99 at e-tailers such as AmazonBarnes & NobleiBooks, etc. To this day, I clearly remember a love scene in which bagpipes drown out the (good) screams of the heroine.  You could say it made an impression. Myretta Robens says A Kiss of Fate will leave even more of a mark on readers who are looking for a touch of magic to their reads, but don't want a vampire, saying: “The unfolding of Gwynne's magic melds seamlessly with the unfolding of the relationship between the two. The story hinges on the magic and yet does not use it as a shortcut to a resolution, which happens all too frequently when magic is a part of the world...”

—Deal Alert: Anne A. Wilson's Hover had us at “helicopter pilot heroine” and is on sale for $2.99 at online retailers like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and iBooks, etc. Fellow romantic suspense writer Mary Burton dropped by H&H to discuss the portrayal of women in law enforcement, citing Tess Gerritsen's Rizzoli and Isles and J.D. Robb's Eve Dallas as examples of badass ladies with badges.

Deal Alert: A.M. Arthur's third book in her Restoration series, Taking a Chance, is $.99 at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iBooks, and more. The theme of “restoration” takes on so many meanings in this book as one hero deals with rebuilding a life after death, addiction, and infidelity take heavy hits while the other hero is a carpenter working to restore a kitchen, and his own life—you'll love to see how these two lives intersect. “This plot screamed “read me,” and the set-up is very fun” said Willaful when she named Taking a Chance one of her male/male romance best bets in September.

Yet worse than Dagger’s family that’s still out to end hers, are the League assassins after him who will stop at nothing to claim the lives of her Tavali family.  Agonizing grief and physical pain laced through him.

27 Best Romance Novels—Your Ultimate TBR Pile

Choosing only twenty-seven books for this epic post was painful, but cuts had to be made! Below, LucyH and TanyaLK tackle the impossible and give a very opinionated opinion of the twenty-seven books they recommend romance lovers should read to fully experience all our wonderful genre has to offer.

The Bollywood Bride (2015) by Sonali Dev

Why? The story of a Bollywood star with a hidden past and the man she let go in order to save. The combination of the Indian culture and the tension between our broken heroine and hero holds the reader captive.

On the Island (2011) by Tracey Garvis-Graves

Why? An improbable story of a seventeen year old cancer survivor, T.J., and his thirty year old tutor, Anna, who survive on an island after their plane crashes. It’s a beautiful love story without the ick-factor.

Kiss an Angel (1996) by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

Why? A marriage of convenience between flighty up-town Daisy Devreaux and humourless traveling circus entertainer Alex Markov is never going to work. Or is it? The unusual circus setting and the passion between Daisy and Alex make this book irresistible.
