Top 5 Highlanders in Romance: The Essential Highland Romance Experience

Source: Shutterstock

Kilty Pleasures!

First of all, boys in kilts. Better than that, men in kilts. Got your attention now? Good. Put the words, “Highlander,” or “Highlander,” on a book cover, and odds are, that book is getting picked off the shelf for at least a look. It’s no surprise. It’s worth a mention that, while all Highlanders are Scots, not all Scots are Highlanders. A Highlander’s devotion to their home and way of life is like none other. Doesn’t hurt that a Highland hunk isn’t hard on the eyes, either. Takes some muscle to wield that sort of weaponry, and when it’s for the right cause, well, dinna fash, lass; all will be well in the end. A strong Highland man or woman, with the right partner beside them, can be an unstoppable force, especially when it comes to commanding reader devotion. Though the motto of the  Highlander movie and TV franchise is, “there can be only one,” thankfully, that’s not even close to true in the romance genre. These Highlanders are likely to bring their whole clan along with them, for even more adventure and romance. That’s a true boon to both new and experienced reader, alike.

Read one Highland romance, and you’ll be part of the clan. Read more than one, and you’ll be ready to extend some Highland hospitality to those only now discovering all that Highland romance has to offer. Here are a few to whet the appetite:

But instead she finds this enormous, powerful stranger, and forgets entirely what she was doing in the first place...

Once back in his arms, Primrose was no longer concerned about their nakedness, simply enjoyed the feel of their skin pressed close together. She knew she ought to care about the fact that she was now completely ruined but she did not. This was what she had wanted, and still believed that she would have always regretted it if she had not tasted it. She ignored the part of her that suffered a severe pang of disappointment over the lack of any declaration of love or promise of a future. That was not what she had been seeking.

“I would like nothing more than to spend the day here with you but we need to go have some food and get back on the road,” he said as he kissed her cheek.

Box of Chocolates: Unusual Historical Best Bets February 2015

Home to Caroline by Adera OrfanelliFebruary may be the shortest month of the calendar, but it’s a wonderful one for a nice variety of not-your-usual historicals. Whether it’s the high seas, America’s wide-open spaces, or some twists on familiar English settings, there’s plenty of intriguing titles vying to be your Valentine.

American-Set!

Home to Caroline by Adera Orfanelli

War couldn’t keep them apart, but their secrets might.

When her husband returns from the Civil War, Caroline has to tell him the truth: their farm is failing and she may be unable to carry a child to term. While he was gone, she struggled to keep the farm going, lost her father and brother to the war and miscarried the child conceived while Travis was home on leave. He returned to the front before Caroline knew she was pregnant.

Travis has a secret of his own. He never learned to farm. She never knew because she had her father and brother to help, but now she has only him and he may not be the man she needs.

Neither is willing to ruin the joy of Travis’s homecoming with bad news, but the truth must come out eventually. Will Travis stay when he finds out Caroline’s shame, and will she want him to when she finds out his?

The author’s backlist consists of erotic scifi romance, and while she loves to read historicals, it took her a while to summon the courage to try her hand at writing one. Home to Caroline is her debut historical romance, as well as her debut with Samhain Publishing.

Highland Guard: Exclusive Excerpt

Hannah Howell

Lady Annys MacQueen has no other choice. The deception that enabled her to keep her lands safe is on the verge of being revealed by a cruel kinsman. To shield her young son from the sword and her people from devastation, she must turn to the one man she could never forget...

He lives for duty and honor. So the only way Sir Harcourt Murray could repay the laird who saved his life was to agree to father a child with Sir MacQueen's wife...Lady Annys.

Now the passion he still feels for the lovely strong-willed widow is as all-consuming and perilous as securing her lands. But to convince her that his love is forever real means confronting her most wrenching fears—and putting everything they treasure most at stake...

Get a sneak peek at Hannah Howell's Highland Guard (available February 24, 2015) with an exclusive excerpt of a selected scene.

Annys nodded and then politely excused herself. It was early to turn in for the night but she needed some time alone. Seeing Sir Harcourt again, realizing he could still stir a fire in her blood, and discovering that someone could have murdered David was all she could bear for now. She needed time to just be alone, to think about it all, and sort through her confused emotions.

It was not until she entered her bedchamber that she realized Joan had followed her. Annys told herself she had no reason to be surprised by that. The woman did act as her maid after all. Yet she had taken no notice of Joan falling into step behind her. She said nothing as Joan helped her prepare for bed. Sitting still before a fire while Joan brushed out her hair worked to ease a lot of the knots in her belly, however, and Annys was soon glad the woman had followed her.
